Indiana State University Department of Chemistry

Mass Spectrometry (MS)

The department of chemistry houses three mass spectrometers. The first is an inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer (ICPMS). The ICPMS is a Thermo Elemental PQ ExCell and is housed in Dr. Wolf's research laboratory.

The other two mass spectrometers are coupled to gas chromatographs (GC-MS)
One is a Varian Saturn ion trap mass spectrometer which is housed in room S34A and is for general use.

The other GC-MS is a Finnigan GCQ ion trap mass spectrometer and is housed in Dr. Fitch's research laboratory.  This spectrometer is capable of electron impact (EI) and chemical ionization (CI) modes as well as tandem mass spectrometry (MSn).

NEW:  The saturn MS failed early last year and is being retired.  We have recently acquired a second GCQ mass spectrometer as a donation from NIH and are bringing this instrument up for general use.  This spectrometer is housed in room S34.
